As we enter the fourth quarter of the year, we celebrate and cherish the growth that has happened for the months prior—for Priest Ranch, our growth is most apparent in our vineyards. Fruit is being picked and making its way to our winery, which means our cellar is growing busier. It’s harvest! For our cellar crew, the days are long, and the work is hard, but ultimately, it’s all worth it when those clusters of premium Napa Valley grapes go into their next growth phase and develop into world-class wines you know and love.
We’re back with another Meet the Team feature! This time, we’re pleased to spotlight our Tasting Room Floor Lead, Juan Calvillo! You have to admit: nothing compares to the Napa Valley in the springtime: the fresh smell of rain in the fields, the vistas of rolling green hills, longer daylight hours, and the first signs of budding in the vineyards. This is a season for discovery and the enjoyment of the outdoors!
During these winter months at Somerston Estate, our vineyards are in a grapevine growth cycle phase referred to as “dormancy.” This occurs after the grapevine drops its leaves and will last until late winter into early spring. Not only does dormancy help the vines tolerate cold temperatures, but it has an important influence on grapevine flowering and vegetative growth in springtime.

You don’t hear about a lot of Grenache Blanc coming from the Napa Valley, but that’s only one of the reasons why we choose to produce it. Aside from the fact that it’s Winemaker Craig Becker’s favorite wine in our portfolio (shhh… don’t tell the other wines!), our Priest Ranch Grenache Blanc is a delightful departure from the usual white wine suspects that you truly can’t go wrong with.
